My daughter informed me this was a SERIOUSLY obscure reference, so I looked it up. And ya know what? Turns out she’s probably right!

When I was a kid my Grandfather always told me that if I poured salt on a rabbit’s tail, he wouldn’t be able to hop away so I could catch him. Of course I believed him! After all, he was Grandpa, which was close to God in a child’s eyes.

As it turns out, it seems this superstition may more local to Indiana and Kentucky. So, if y’all aren’t a “little bit country” or are part of the younger crowd, I just explained to you WHY this IS funny, so you can go ahead and laugh now.
